On July 19th, the Africa club of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 92nd Birthday of Dr. Nelson Mandela, a great son of Africa and the world.
This day is celebrated at Springdales School every year to commemorate his Birthday and to recognize his contribution to resolving conflicts, promoting race relations and human rights. The function was a culmination of the Africa Week events, held on the theme, “South Africa- from Freedom to football”.
Welcoming the guests, Dr. Jyoti Bose, Principal, Springdales School Dhaula Kuan, said that Nelson Mandela has been an inspiration to all of us all through these years and he holds a special place in the heart of all Springdalians. She saluted the great personality who disintegrated prejudice and discrimination in South Africa.
A report on the activities undertaken during the Africa Week,2010 by the students on the theme was read out and The Lakshmi Sheshadri Memorial Trophy for the Best participating House was presented to Felicity House.
The function also included a visual presentation which took us on a journey to “South Africa from Freedom to Football”. The school choir presented ‘Pata- Pata’ by Miriam Makeba, Mandela’s favorite singer.
Speaking on the occasion, the Guest of Honour, Advocate, Mr. David Nkosi, First Secretary, South Africa High Commission said that he was humbled by the efforts of Springdales School to recognize Mandela’s struggle for peace and freedom. He also said that India and South Africa are inseparable and what students are doing here is a continuation of what our forefathers did long ago.
